Inc. 500 Reveals "America's 500 Fastest Growing Private Companies"

#479 Inc. Magazine, October 2003

#342 Inc. Magazine, October 2002

#142 Inc. Magazine, October 2001

Ethnic-chic™ furniture importer, Four Hands, has made the list of Top 500 fastest growing private companies in the country for three consecutive years. Inc. Magazine, the premier publication for small and medium-sized businesses ranks the nation's leading entrepreneurial firms according to sales growth over the 5 previous years. Former Inc.500 names that have gone on to become household names include E*Trade, Microsoft, Timberland, Domino's Pizza, and Patagonia. Four Hands ranked #479 on the 2003 list and reached 335% growth over the past 5 years. Four Hands' sales have grown from $1 million in 1997 to $26 million in 2004.

The companies that made this list have thrived through continued stagnation in the economy, posting an average five-year sales growth of 1,312%. With aggregate revenue of $14.4 billion, Inc. 500 companies are a formidable market force. And while the United States shed 1.5 million jobs in 2002, Inc. 500 companies - half of which were launched with less than $20,000 - provided employment for 67,973 people.

"The entrepreneurs you'll find on the Inc. 500 have the type of attitude we need to get this economy moving again," said Inc. Magazine editor-in-chief John Koten. "For them, a tough market is not an excuse for poor performance, but an opportunity to innovate and rise above the competition."

Brett Hatton, President and CEO, of Four Hands said, "It is quite an honor to be among the Top 500 fastest-growing private companies in America for the third year in a row. It has been through commitment and attention to detail that has allowed us to propel the company to the heights that it has reached since 1996. We will continue to stay focused on our mission and vision. We want to change Four Hands from a good company to a great company."

The Initiative for a Competitive Inner City (ICIC) is a national, non-partisan, not-for-profit organization founded in 1994 by Harvard Business School Professor Michael E. Porter, following several years of pioneering research on inner-city business and economic development. With affiliates in three cities and significant on-the-ground activities in many others, ICIC has rapidly established itself as a national force in inner-city economic development. By identifying the competitive potential of inner cities; strategic location, local market demand, growth opportunities via integration with the regional economy and availability of labor, ICIC aims to build the business case for doing business in America's inner cities. ICIC's mission is to spark new thinking about the business potential of inner cities, thereby creating jobs and wealth for inner-city residents.
