Last month, Architectural Designer Kim Lewis was approached by Ford, Fox Sports, and the Dallas Cowboys with a wholly new challenge: remodeling a fire station. Lewis jumped at the chance, employing her longtime motto – “Using Design to Change Lives” – to transform Dallas Fire House No. 43 into a functional space with an industrial vibe. Fitting that the former ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition
designer utilized several Four Hands styles in her transformation, since we strive, similarly, to furnish spaces with enriching inspiration.
We’re wild about Lewis’s imaginative use of our stately Tahoe Dining Table, to which she added Wharton Dining Chairs for a casual, comfy vibe. A dining bench, brilliantly woven from vintage fire hoses, plays up the Tahoe’s rustic pine design with a warm, upcycled air.
Copper pipe shelving inventively upgraded a boxy kitchen into a dual-purpose prep counter/coffee nook. The designer even surprised the former Folgers devotees’ with a top-of-the-line espresso machine. “We may have created the snobbiest firefighters ever!” laughs Lewis.
We also love Lewis’s addition of our Element Media Console, its burly iron frame instantly modernizing the lounge area while preserving the throwback firehouse feel she envisioned. With jet-black leather and brass nailhead trim, our Larkin Sofa further adds a vintage, masculine vibe. A Bosco Magazine Rack serves a sleek finishing touch while maximizing storage.
For Lewis, this makeover wasn’t limited to the chance to flex her skills; she lever loses sight of her motto. By bettering No. 43, the designer hoped to enrichen the lives of the everyday heroes who work – and live – at the station in three-day shifts. To give back – even a little – to the firefighters who risk their lives for our safety.
“At times during the remodel, an announcement would come over the intercom, saying, ‘Gunshot wound at X-Y-Z intersection…’” Lewis pauses. “And they just get up and go. It was such an honor to give back to these people who serve our community every day.”
Courtesy of Ford, Fox Sports, and the Dallas Cowboys, the station’s big reveal was debuted during the Cowboys’ Thanksgiving Day pre-game show. Lewis tapped designer Laura Rhoades and Dallas-based contractors Landmark Home Improvement, to help her meet the quick deadline.
